Stock a tank - wrong answers only!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Start with a juvie arapeima or asian arowana

you know this can actually be taken seriously. When I started fish keeping I got a book that was supposed to be a "beginners guide" on fish keeping. It had many stocking suggestions and one of them was an Oscar in a 29. I actually seriously considered it.

edit it's this book:

Well, they don't build 29s like they used to

Not sure about that. Think you would do better with a dozen skunk loaches.

Ikr? The most aggression-free stocking possible for this tank!

Plus 1-3 tiger barbs (long finned!). The Spruce Pets is dead wrong about this, we ought to prove it to them too ? ? ?

FWIW my solo tiger is a model citizen…stays out of the way and let’s the cichlids do the fighting lol
I always tried groups of 3-4 - took me a while to figure out why it would always go to one.

Let’s start with an arbitrary 30 gallon tank.
What should I put in it?

I’m thinking a Jack Dempsey pair with a few goldfish, because fish need friends. Why would a Jack Dempsey be named after a famous boxer if they didn’t like to have friends? Boxers have friends! Also a common pleco for cleanup because every tank needs an algae eater.

(Only one rule, keep it somewhat reasonable, but whatever you do don’t make something that actually would work - something that somebody may actually try)
I think a 30g with a pair of blue phantom plecos, an African butterfly fish and 3 or 5 silver dollars sounds pretty nice
