Stock list for 220g

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i think its going to be boring, cichlids make for a boring 225. It took me a year to realize that and I got rid of all the cichlids from my 225 and focused on things like bichirs, catfish, my GG etc. and I have never looked back. so much more interesting tank.

Your stocking sounds great but i recommend you actually think about wether or not the tank will keep you interested, people can flame me all they want but the last person I told this too decided like a month or 2 later that I was right.

Couldn't disagree more, but then again we are in the Cichlid forums lol. How they act at 5" and at 12"+ are a bit different l, but most folks don't have the patience to get there.

Speaking from experience, I had similar stock in my 300 and the last thing I would describe it as boring, especially with an amph in the mix. My midas kept things interesting. You might have to referee a bit once they reach adulthood.

Monitor as they grow and maybe add some targets/dithers.

Yeah listen to the guy with 60 posts who has been on the forum for a month.

everyone is different I'm not trying to say that anyone is right or wrong, but considering I kept and bred CA cichlids for 10 years as soon as I got a giant 3' wide tank and stocked it with nice monster cichlids I got bored really quickly. there was constant fighting, always having to move fish or sell fish or one just picking on the others, never able to put anything extra in the tank. I spent more time worrying about my stock getting along it just wasn't worth the effort...
And more importantly there have been a lot of other members that have also felt this way... It seems people always flock to this section but sooner or later they divert to other parts of the site.

Now i have a shoal of 12 albino tinfoils, fully grown. a giant gourami, some bichirs, catfish and a snakehead.
everyone gets along fine, I don't ever have to worry, lots of awesome predators and its a very cool tank to watch. I never have looked back from changing out my cichlid stock. I guess after so many years you get sick.

I have just set up a nice 120 (4x2x2) amazon type peaceful tank and I will be having some geo's in there but I probably won't keep aggressive CA cichlids for a long time.

OP your tank looks great. look out for the festae though it may( not necessarily since yo got it a bit larger than the rest) grow a bit slower than the rest of your stock.
Rafini your stocklist sounds really interesting... but so does the OP's.
opinions are just that... opinions.
I like brunettes... some others like blondes.
personal preference varies from person to person.
That being said it would probably be best if you call on your many past years of experience to advise the questions in the Cichlids forum.
the Birchir, catfish and characin sections may really appreciate your opinions and advice on your current stock

Lol yeah judge my experience on my post count.

I was being a smart ass because you said people were going to flame you.

Calm down people. Don't flare with one another, I'm now looking into some human cichlids flaring for a territory in a strawberry.

OP just stick what you think suits your view, anyone could change preferences over time, even so, keeping fish to adulthood is really rewarding though, and yeah, just like others said a while ago, better keep a keen eye for aggression or so. Cheers!

I've changed community setups so many times because I always think the grass is greener on the other side. Try it out and if its boring or unmanageable change it for something else.
I setup a 135 as an mbuna setup and learned that as active and as busy as the tank was, it didn't interest me much. My family didnt like it either.....,I changed it back to a community with a few medium cichlids, catfish and barbs and its one of our favorite tanks.

Each keeper will find different species interest them differently. My Jd is shy and aggro .... My Festae is out front and personable. As adults you may have to separate fish or rethink your stock due to lack of territory, but for me that's just a part of the hobby and a part that I welcome. I have no problem moving fish if needed, but then again I didn't sign up for a peaceful community style setup either.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think ill be getting bored with these guys anytime soon lol. I will look for a few dithers/targets, keep an eye out for aggro and hope for the best. I should be able to get a few months out of theses guys before someone decides they want all 220g to themselves. It may be wishful thinking tho as its been a couple days and already no one likes the syn. I know they can be shy initially but he better man up fast cause the last thing the amph is is shy. I see him being a real jerk in the near future.

Really? You think time here and post count is what matters:screwy:

If that's the case then your lookin' pretty pathetic. Only a little over a year and 1100 posts

So it's only been a few days and I'm sad to report that I don't think it's gonna work out 😔. The Dempsey and the devil have effectively teamed up to dominate the entire tank already. The Dempsey hates my festae and the devil hates the syn. If I let this continue the only the I can expect is dead fish so I'm gonna re home them all and give the tank to my red texas.
