Hello everyone,

I have been fishing for most of my life, but for nothing too hard. The only time I can remember actually targeting something other than sun fish was when I went to North Carolina on a fishing trip (caught a 10 lb rainbow :)) but my skills have deteriorated since then. This weekend, a local 5 acre pond will be stocked with 1000 trout for a kids derby on Saturday. On Sunday I plan to go and fish for a little bit to get my feet wet for the summer (where I plan on taking on some more challenging tasks) and I was wondering if anyone has any tips to help me out. I have a lot of experience, but very little success, so I still feel like a noob.

Any advice appreciated!

Lol I feel like If u were nearby you I would see a bunch of little kids standing there fishing with little dora fishing poles and your just going insane catching all different trout. But in all seriousness I find that trout bait as in the power bait dough works very well on stocked trout

Lol, I doubt many kids will be there on Sunday. On average only about 80 of the 1000 trout are caught at the derby (and A TON of kids go). I think I'm gonna go with power bait since that's what I've had success with (I don't think a spinner will work well in the murky water).

Honestly I just wanna go have some fun and catch a nice amount of trout (catch and release) for a couple of hours to relax in between studying for finals.

Trout nuggets or power bait work well. Around here the stocked fish like green and orange. I use many small spinners spoons and casmaters. They go nuts over them and the water is not clear. Also crawlers or trout worms 3-4ft down from a small float never seem to fail.

If you're using power bait:

1/8oz sliding egg sinker behind a swivel. 12-18" leader with a #16/18 treble hook.
You can use a small split shot for weight but I wouldn't put any stress on 2-4lb

If you want to use a bobber, tie on a mini jig w/ a 24-48" leader, depending on lake depth.
Add a piece of a nightcrawler or whole meal worm. Keep twitching the bobber while reeling in very slowly. Pause for 5 sec once in a while.
Or you can always just go the straight worm route. This method works great in murky water.
Try throwing spoons, rooster tails, mepps, Thomas buoyant, etc. stocker trout readily hit lures and bait.

Hmmmm I think I may set up a line with power bait and then have a rooster tail or spinner running on another pole.

Thanks for the advice guys

I just use single hooks and they work fine. I don't waste time with the dough worm. They are freshly stocked trout. The trout pellets look like the preformed nuggets. Just put one on and call it good. They do swallow the hook a lot more with power bait. Since it is a put and take system just eat them they are taste.
