Hi All,

I am getting ready to do a very large freshwater tank build - will be 96" x 42" x 30" - L x W x H.

I will be stocking it with geophagus, severums and scalare angels.

I am trying to decide how many of each I can fit. I am not planning on breeding any of them just a nice display tank.

The only thing I am for sure on, is I have a group of 7 Geophagus tapajos "red heads".

A friend has a group of 8-10 Geophagus altifrons and a group of 6-7 Geophagus tapajos "peach faced" I would love to add in this tank with my geophagus tapajos red heads.

I will be growing out all the severums and angels from juveniles, not starting with large already sexually mature fish.

The tank is going to be aquascaped with large pieces of branching manzanita wood.

Any suggestions would be great. I have never done a large freshwater tank. I am a big saltwater guy, I have around 2000 gallons of this.

Thanks!

first off, tapajos "red head" and tapajos "peachfaced" are the same species.
I sounds like it is going to be an amazing tanks for sure though

I understand they are the same species, they are just two different color varients right? Does this mean I will not be able to mix them or just making sure I knew they were the same species.

As far as I am informed about earth eaters, the Tapajos are a little more agressive than the standard gentle Geophagus. Therefore I would suggest to stock the tank with
Geophagus Tapajos read head
Pterophyllum altum
Heros severum/rotkeil
and a pair of green terrors

I love altums but concerned about getting them acclimated and healthy into the tank. I have heard tons of horror stories getting them healthy.

How many angels and severums do you think I could fit without overcrowding issues?

The other thing I should mention is in this tank there will be a trio of stingrays

Interesting, so they look the same? My group is currently a little larger and in a tank with much brighter lighting then my friends group so I have not been able to see a side by side comparison.

If you don't want the "real" altums, you can go for Peru Altums. They are bred easily and should adapt without problems. They aren't the real deal, but still nice looking angel fish - especially if you have a group of 7 - 10.
Then 5 to 6 Heros and the GT pair combined with 2 or 3 small rays like P. reticulatus and you'll have a nice tank!

That's a huge tank. You could stock all the cichlids listed above. Add the rays once the tank is nicely matured. After that you can base any further stocking on your water tests and whether the tank looks full/empty. Have you thought about uaru as a possibility too.
