Stocking a 220 gal!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Umm what do you think of 3 vs 4 Peacock bass and the possibility of a midas? I like the suggestions for some of the smaller fish but those will go in probably later. Anyone have a good segguestion for a small-ish dither type fish to kind of you know fill up the space in the tank movement wise? I know that I will have to upgrade in the future too but hopefully it will be this for a few years.:) I am looking to have this setup for around 4 years then I will sell some of the stock off and keep what I can. The marble cat I can see wont work due to size already.
I have never kept them, myself, but I would think the pbass would probably outgrow your tank well before 4 years have passed.

What if i cut down to 2 or 3 peacock bass? I understand how big these fish get and I thought this was around the smallest size of tank recommended. Gar are also and alternative I would be intrested in.

As people have mentioned, you will need a larger tank, and I don't think that it will last even close to 4 years before you need to upgrade. From what I understand pbass grow quite quickly. You will need a fully covered canopy especially for the Aro. It needs not only to be covered, but also quite heavy as these fish do get a substantial mass to them and when it decides to leap it will likely have some considerable force behind it.

you could always put in abunch of firemouths and Jack Dempsey's that would be my dream aquarium right there lol

tank is too short and too narrow for a adult silver aro.

yea the length of the tank has to be three times the more than twice and the wide has to be a least the fishes length

you could prob at the MOST get 1 or 2 pbass MAYBE only by them selves an thats it but thats pushin it... Arowana def no way... full size need prob at least a 280

You only have what basically amounts to a tall 180 gallon, cichla and arowana shouldn't be considered IMO.

As much as I agree with this statement, here are some counterpoints.

I have seen plenty of people keeping pbass in tanks as small as 125's. Does that make it right....no. does that make it doable...yes. I think 3 pbass would be alright in a 220 for while. They grow pretty fast but once the hit 12" their growth slows dramatically. I'm not saying it would make it to 4 years, but it would be good for 2-3 id imagine.

The juruense catfish sounds fine to me. I keep a 220 CA/SA tank and I had a thread about these and people said it would be fine with my tanksize, and I agree

I agree the aro is out of the question. I really want one too, but I know that a 6x2 tank could house it for a very short period.

Realistically if you stock this as you plan then it will be nothing more than a growout tank for future monsters. And unless you plan accordingly it can get out of hand quickly. If you are anything like me you get very attached to your fishy friends, and its very hard to get rid of them at that point. This is the main reason people end up with drastically overstocked tanks. They mean well, but just can't house their pets properly.

If it were me, my stocklist would be:
2xPbass
1xjuruense catfish
3xbichir (whatever species you prefer)
1xflagtail
And maybe a large growing pleco (again up to you)

HTH!
