Stocking a 270 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
two different species of of geos, maybe a group of 6 or so each, some festivus and some angels would be pretty cool. lots of driftwood

I'd love to have these in a 270:

Crenicichla multispinosa 3 (check out Rapp's stocklist; pricey but the coolest crenicichla of them all!)

Hoplarchus psittacus--a nice group 5-7 of them

Cichla orinocensis or ocellarus--1

Geophagus winemilleri, abalios, or dicrozoster: 3-5

Guianacara sphenozona/geayi 4-6 (great complementary eartheater to geos; smaller, very active and even more personality. Might be too small to keep with Cichla once it gets >12-14" long though)

Pseudacanthicus leopardus, M+F

A handful of medium sized characins--go for something different (e.g., Hemiodus)

I envy your project!

A large group of either Satanoperca daemon or S. acuticeps.

Through in a large single school of the appropiate tetras (lemons for the S. acuticeps, penguins or colombians for the S. daemon ... depending if I was doing a Rio Negro or Colombian setup) ...

A couple of pairs of the appropiate dwarf pike cichlids as well (noto's for the Rio Negro S. daemon, Colombian wallacii or sp. orinoco dwarves for the Colombian S. daemon ... Cr. regani 'Tapajos' for the S. acuticeps).

Then probably a pair of dwarf acaras (Laetacara araguaiae for the S. acuticeps, Laetacara fulvipinnis for the S. daemon) or harem of apistos to round it out.

I think I would do a tank with alot of wood branches and maybe a stump. As for fish I would go with a school of Myleus or Mylossoma. Perhaps some Triportheus if I could find them. Definaltley a pleco and some Hoplosternum and for Cichlids I would go with chocolates or severums. I would stay away from to many aggressive fish since the schooling characins would be quite a sight in themselves.

A quick update. I wasn't able to get to much done this weekend due to in-laws where in town. I was able to finish up the plumbing for filter. When I was testing the plumbing I did find a small leak around the bulkhead. :irked:
I think it just need to be tighten a little more and then I should be good to go. I give yous guys another update later tonight.
:headbang2

Oh yea here is pic of the tank.

Tank was dirty. I know I could wait to take the picture. lol

^ that is a beautiful tank! Your getting some good stocking suggestions here. I personnaly would avoid any cichla though (let the flaming begin) but IMO there are not many people keeping them in a proper sized tank. (derail over :D)

I agree about tank size, despite my suggestion of Cichla. I also overstated the quantity of the Hoplarchus group; that probably wouldn't work in the long run. I like buying groups and thinning out later though.

I also agree with the poster who suggested Satanoperca daemon; I'd probably do that instead of Geophagus. Not sure there's a more colorful and elegant cichlid than daemon.

I also like Triportheus--nice call from someone!

Bullshark, what do you think of Crenicichla multispinosa? Aside from being gorgeous, could it work in a 270 community tank with daemon, etc?

I would say:
1x Osteoglossum bicirrhosum
6x Geophagus winemilleri or
4x Satanoperca dameon
2x Heros notatus (pair)
3x Pimelodus ornatus

This tank would be stocked relatively lightly, which I think makes for a more enjoyable setup.
I really like Darth Pike's too
