I have 2 black moors in fantastic health! They have perky fins and rich black color, almost like velvet. They are about 4 or 5 inches in length. The only problem is, there isn't much movement. They drift around and forage, beg for food, etc but they aren't really fast.

...Or hyperactive. They are the only fish in an unheated 29 gallon tank. I do a 40% change every week. There are no live plants but I am going to get some sort of moss when they are stocked.

So I want to add a small coolwater species like a danio or something. I read in one place that they don't mind an unheated tank. Do two small moors stock the tank fully, or is there enough room for 5 or so zebra danios? It really looks empty. I heard a few general rules for stocking goldfish;

"first one 20 gallons, then 10 per each additional"

and "10 gallons each"

and "10 gallons minimum for fancy, 20 for common"

It doesn't matter if their diet is different, I could just feed the goldfish pellets and peas too big for the danios, and the danios would get most of the tropical flakes. What say you all? The moors are almost 2 years old, the tank has been set up for 2 years.

Think you're full already with those two fish in a 29. Gold fish pack on a heavy bioload. In terms of fish that could go with them, you pretty much want to stick with other fancy goldfish because other fish will outcompete them for food.

Hmmm. Ok.

Oh well, I guess I can live with these little moors for now... Until forever. I didn't buy them, my brother did, and he left for "college."

if you watch your water parameters, a group of 5 danios(not giants) or white clouds would fit, you've got room but like oscarcrazy said, goldfish add a lot of waste to the tank. however i do disagree that you have to stick to other fancy goldfish, feeding foods like pellets that the danios cant eat(too large) will allow the goldfish to get plenty of food while feeding stuff like spiralina flakes will keep the danios well fed plus the gold fish will get a bit, keeping goldfish with mixed species or body types is easy to do, ime, you just need to pay a little more attention at feeding time.

:iagree:

I guess I had better get a test kit for nitrate before I do anything to th' tank. I ran out of nitrate stuff a few months ago.

hahaha, yea that might be a good idea. if it were my tank i'd probably put in 7 white clouds(2 male, 5 female) i love their behaviors when in a good sized school

My moors are ferocious and I have a feeling they ate the sticklebacks I used to have... 2 disappeared and on the same night, and the biggest one's head had chew marks and was found dead. Do you think white clouds are fast enough?

...Or big enough... I think they hunt at night. The sticklebacks even had a big patch of plants to hide in. I don't think 3 of them would die of natural causes on the same day and vanish... without a trace. Well, it is possible. I might get some inedible or plastic plants too.(moved all of the plastic plants to my other tank) Might go to the LFS tomorrow. I was planning to get more upside down cats for my larger tank.

white clouds are definitly fast enough, i think it was more likely that your sticklebacks died of other causes and were scavenged upon by the moors.
