make sure its actually a festae if you get it from the lfs. a lot of lfs sell uro/mayans as festae. theyre great fish too, but if youre looking to get a festae, dont let them fool you

Also, fish in LFS are usually stressed and not at their peak. Bitter is right. Festaes are commonly mixed w/ mayans and mayans are nothing compared to festae's when full grown. After all, you could've seen a mayan or a stressed out festae.
For a 55gal for life, I would stick with the smaller cichlids, like Jack Dempseys, convicts, firemouths and similar. Make sure you have good filtration and frequent water changes. Depending on the type of silver dollar you purchase, they can get big (6-8"), so plan for it.
