Stocking a 6 foot CA tank possibly SA Geos

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most Vieja are really not predatory, in fact most are at least 50% vegetarian, eating fallen fruit, leaves, and seeds in nature.
They, of course will not pass up live bearer fry as extra protein, but are fairly inept at chasing down fish to eat as long as the tank is large enough.
I believe a group of 8 meeki is a good shoal, they are very social in nature.

So here is a couple quick pics or the Vieja Melanura Male? after approximately 3 hours in the tank. Hopefully, he/she is not a Frankenstein. He/she was with 5 hermanos of the same agei in a 120 gallon. He is approximately 2 years old raised from eggs. Purchased him/her pretty cheap from a man here locally. He said he had one female out of the hatch that he kept back for himself., but this was a male. He/she and the S. Angelicus have hit it off pretty well...he would probably be hiding behind the rocks if my S. Angelicus wasn't so needy and clingy lol. He/she is so damn orange though...reminds me of Gossamer you know the big orange carpet thing that is always with the martian on Bugs Bunny. I wish he had more blue on him like some that I have seen, but hey for what I payed for him/her...I am okay with w/e.

Well 8 of these little 3 inch buggers just arrived. All seem to be healthy and have good color hope there are some females. Sorry for the bad close up pick but they were hiding.

Well it has been roughly a week and he is seemingly getting more color and not solid orange/red. He appears to be happy, however, he is pretty shy. I plan to get some Green Swordtail dithers.

These are bad pics because they were taken after he excavated the entire substrate causing cloudy water. He was actually out working and not in his cave so I thought I would squeeze a pic or two. Glad I took the dive into CA. I am very green and newbish with New World Cichlids, but I can see why so many love and covet them. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.

Looking good, Matt! Good luck with the new set up.
