Stocking a 75 and Angelfish Tank Mates

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Do you have plans in place when the angelfish start to pair off? Theyre too prolific for me to keep them even as old as 8 months old as they kept having babies and keep half of the tank to themselves terrorizing and keeping everyone else away from their nest. Jeez they spawned on EVERYTHING! Even filter intake, walls etc. Keyholes were more nicer and laidbacked I loved ther personalities.

I understand the obsession of the cichlids but there are plenty of dwarf SA cichlids option out there

The only angels im considering keeping again is the harder to breed ones then I know I can have a peaceful tank for a while. Like the Altums. I do not like breeding cichlids as much as I like breeding the different pleco species or catfish. Its not my thing. Everyone got their limits.

In regards to tetras. Most tetras can be kept with angels. Just find one or two that suits your fancy thats not a fin nipper. Its common sense that smaller tetras such as small neons can be viewed as fish food. Ive kept cardials with my angelfish with no issue though theyre same sized as the neons. It depends on the fish itself too. Rumnynoses are a great starter tetra as you can keep eye on it as if the red on the nose fades something is wrong with the water. They schooled well too.

For the cories, there are so many varieties so whatever you pick enjoy! They get along with everyone that doesnt pick on them or wants to eat them. Some prefer cooler or warmer but cichlids you are wanting to stock is in the happy medium for all cories.

Pick a fish YOU are most interested in and build a tankmate list AROUND it.

Even with 3 tanks running here now i keep switching fish around finding that zen for me. It will be the same with you. If you find a fish not working out. Always can rehome it. No big deal.

My advice: get a BN pleco as a "cleanup crew" I regret not picking up a couple last month at a fish swap meet and am going to this weekend. Cant have snails to clean up as got loaches here.

Cheers

Thank you, I was looking into Bn plecos and other smaller plecos. With the angels, I am trying to start off with 10, and then as they pair off only keep the males or females. Leaning towards all-male as they seem to be less likely to breed and lead a more peaceful tank. If they do end up breeding I have tank dividers ready and a spare 20 If anything. I have read about the keyholes peaceful nature which is why I picked them.

Yeah deal with thinning the herd and working with the fish you are growing out to find that zen. Cheers!
