Stocking a new 180g adding in my 55g

anyone have a fire eel in a community tank? how are they with tankmates ill have all larger fish in the tank i just hopefully dont want it to kill anything

my LFS does carry large and small fire eels they are beautiful i would definitely love to have one of them also has 8-12'' wild caught bichir which are pretty cool

Don't get one. They get 36". That's too big.

There isn't an eel in the size range that you're looking in that doesn't burrow. Every freshwater eel that doesn't burrow is either very large, or small (compared to others). The best sized eel you can get would be a smaller spiny eel, which grow around 8-10".

A Polypterus would work better. You could get one that grows smaller than an eel, but they still look similar to an eel. If you still want an eel go for a half banded spiny eel. I can tell you from my experience, if you want an eel for that tank, that's the one to get. They get around 8", so they won't outgrow the tank, and have a lot of personality (for an eel). Mine was roaming the tank %80-90 of the time it was awake. Along with that they don't look that bad as far as eels go. This was mine.

If you do get a Half Banded Spiny eel, it will take a lot of looking around. Check your lfs frequently, aquabid, and even PetSmart, which is where I actually found mine, labeled as a Peacock eel.
