I need help putting together a stocking plan for my new tank. I am new to this site but not to fish keeping. I have had a 75 gallon tank up and running for about 5 years now. It has mostly been a community tank. I am going with mostly South American cichlids in the new tank. I have no idea how to come up with stocking numbers for a tank this big.
I really need some help with this. The only fish moving from my 75 will be a fire eel that is about 14 inches long. This is a list of the fish that I have in mind.

Green Texas
Jack Dempsey
Albino Oscar
Tiger Oscar
Green Terror
Convict
Red Devil
Silver Aro
Bala Sharks
Tinfoil Barbs

All the fish will be bought as juveniles. How many of each will I be able to keep? All your help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hey WELCOME TO MFK congrats on the new monster tank. I would think that you could easily do a pair of each cichlid alot of the ones you have listed are actually from central America so we will just call them New world cichlids Africans being Old world cichlids. I am curious to the dimensions of your tank. If it is at least 8 feet long then there should be little problem with territory disputes. The red devil will be most likely be the boss of the tank and I would be careful with the silver aro because the cichlids may pick on him if he is too small.

Good luck and keep us updated

we needs a smiley that bows lol. how about a stingray tank? with a arow and some other monster fish such as catfish etc... with chiclids in a tank that big like the above post said there will most likely be some territorial desputes. if you go threw some of the forms on here stingray catfish etc.... im sure you could find some really kool fish to stock your tank with.

The tank will be 10 x 4 x 2.5. Should the fish be put in the tank in any certain order? Would it be wise to put the silver aro in my 75 until it has some size about it?

I think you need a few catfish in that list of yours. a Synodontis Angelicus Catfish
(Synodontis angelicus) or other Synodontis cats an maybe a Pseudodoras niger, or Girafee cat.

I would leave out the red devil. Its mostly personal preference for me, but its also because they are so aggressive. You could have a chance for peace in a tank that size, but RD's are pretty nasty.
- And i seem to be the only one that thinks they are butt ugly.

But anyways,

You could stock that tank with quite a few of each of those fish.
But like that one girl said, :D dont two different sexed convicts or you'll have a population explosion. THe other fish could take care of the fry, but you never know.

If you have such an extraoridinary tank why are you going with such common run of the mill fish? If you HAVE to have cichlids the only thing I can say is CICHLA aka peacock bass!! I group of them in a tank like that with a nice catfish like a B. Juruense, planiceps, tigrinis, and a large pleco would KICK ASS. A tank that size would also make a nice ray/aro tank.

Browse the peacock bass and stingray forums and see how you like it. Check out our member dieselmacks cichla tanks photos in the photo lounge....AMAZING!!
