I've been keeping reef aquariums since 1999 and wanted to set up another tank to get back to my cichlid roots. Back in the 80s I kept a large managuense and I'm getting nostalgic. I have room in the house for a 120 gallon, four foot long tank, and would like some suggestions for interesting medium sized cichlids or perhaps a single larger "wet pet" cichlid with personality and color. I know those dimensions are way too small for a full grown managuense. Thanks.

I've been doing some googling about nics lately. They seem pretty cool.

I've always been a fan of salvinis but ime they can be kind of shy.

Does nics = Hypsophrys nicaraguensis? If so, that certainly is an attractive cichlid. I'll have to consider that one. I was also considering rotkeil severums, festivums, or maybe uarus.

Yup, those are nics. I've seen a lot variation in their color and vibrancy of color but when they look good they look real good.
I would think severums would do ok in there but I don't know. Any time I see uarus I see them in big groups in really big tanks. I've also heard they're not the easiest to raise... Or find lol.

they are smaller but have you considered a bunch of ram cichlids? Bolivian reds, German blues, gold rams, and electric blue rams? around 5 of each would look amazing

That's a stunning fish. I've never seen one before.
I had a small spot Polleni for over 2yrs with a bunch of africans in a 6' tank & he was the showpiece, absolute stunner, but in the end i got rid of him because he got grumpy & terrorized all my africans. He didn't kill anyone but he had them constantly bailed up one end of the tank.
I always regretted getting rid of him & not the Africans.
As far as your tank tank goes a Polleni or GT with a bunch of Spotted Silver$ would be a great setup. If you want a show tank be aware the Polleni will dig & dig where as a GT doesn't tend too dig much at all. Can't go wrong either way. Rams r nice fish too but a bit on the delicate side i think.
