Interesting, there was a thread about this a while back

Come on what do you think LFS do? You think there adding "prime" or "Stress Coat" or De-chlorinator to there water everytime they do water changes or get in new shipments? I think not, there in business to make money not spend it, or throw it down the drain. That doesn't even happen with there high end marine tanks, though it may happen with there higher end Discus tanks, but not often. This is why I don't understand why you do so much nonsense to your water. I told you how to do things and you still love just to run full speed up to a brick wall and slam your head up against it , for the heck of it :wall:.

Dude why are you using RO, because you say you water is too hard correct? And the PH is like 8.0~9.0 or something crazy. So we talked about starting a planted discus tank. And I said 1. use Flourite, 2. add Chemi-pure to your canister, 3. use a C02 system, 4. use Flourish plant food.

Fourite doesn't effect water chemistry, Chemi-pure does, in a good way only. Flourish is a good easy food too use. And C02 will lower the PH in an aquarium without the use of chemicals. But if your water chemistry is still too high PH? wise then there several other things that you can do to help, that don't involve adding as many chemicals as you do, ie: Driftwood, the Tannins is drftwood will help to lower PH and beautify your tank. Peat can be added to the canister or directly to the tank in a small nylon bag. Yeah, yeah Peat can darken the water coloration but that only really bothers the owner not the fish. I for one think it makes things look more natural. And the plants love it too.

You asked me about switching over to a planted tank, I made four or five suggestions and then you went off on your own for a bit and with the new planted tank. Then I turn around and your starting up another tank, for some other types of fish and to tell you the truth you haven't gotten your planted Discus tank off the ground yet really.

Sorry to go off a bit but, I just don't get why people always do things half assed.:irked:

2 months of research, is hardly running head first at something is it:screwy: So I use ro water for changes, big deal and yes I add minerals to the water, I failing to see your point?

1. I use flourite
2. I have chemi pure in my canister
3. I don't a CO2 system, the plants are going without it and I seem to remember someone saying, it would be ok without one
4. I use flourish

Again I fail to see your point?

Please explain what chemicals you think I'm using because I'm not

Again, how is following your suggestions apart from not adding co2 going off on my own? You are of course correct that tank is still not good enough in terms of the planting, I've got some cutting growing out that once established will make a big difference.

So I setup another tank, which came from a conversation which almost resulted in a very cheap second hand tank to do it in, as everything was already planned when that fell through I bought a new one that was still cheap

No need for to apologize for an opinion:)

The thread I was on about was to 'prime' or not to 'prime'

To Prime or not to Prime, that is the question:

I don't prime or RO, or de-chlorinate or add minerals, all I do is drain water - 80+ gal per change in the hotter months straight from the TAP to the tank. I don't add anything to the tank before, during or after a water change. When I had a planted tank with or without Discus, I didn't even add plant food until the next day or too after the change.

People that do all these additives are just making something that is really easy, real laborsome. And let me tell you your LFS love you people more than anyone else, not because your paying there rent, oh know but because your putting their children through college. Your the reason the Pet trade is rated the four largest business, following right behind computer games. I know not about the rest of the world but in the USA, the pet/aquarium business was a 10+ Billion dollar a yr business back in 2000 wonder where it is now.

I use nothing but water! All the time.

^^ Yes I use minerals, I have the stuff since I got the tank, I can't remember how I came by it, i think it was thrown in free with the ro machine which I got for around than trade. I still have enough for at least 2 years, so I'm hardly supporting a 10 billion $ industry.

Yes I treat the water from the tap, we can't all be blessed with the fantastic stuff but again I don't use this prime, or stress coat etc. I use the pond equivalent. Why would I buy a little bottle for a £10 that treats one water change when I can spend the same about for essentially the same thing that will treat 5000g, again will probably last another 18 months.

You really don't understand my point sometimes, If it works for you fine, I'm quite happy with adding 4ml every change, works out at a industry shattering $0.045 a change and that's on the big tank.

You must think I sit here buying ph up, ph down, stress coats, minerals, buffer this, buffer that, test this, test that. Apart from one test kit that you were right about I've not purchased anything liquid to go in the tanks this year apart from plant fertz. Wasted cash about £7. Wasted cash on fish, about £8 on the cardinals and £9 on the L201 that got trapped in a piece of wood:irked:

Damm, I'm late for work again, now where's that £50 to light my cigarette with;)

Glad I decided against trying to mimic something like the great shots Lou posted a few pages back, I've lost the L201, it got trapped and there was so much crap coming up from the marbles tonight on water change I'm going to have to remove all the wood etc in a few days and do it again properly:nilly:

That is indeed the problem when you finally manage to get a great tank decor... it also usually means that you have a nightmare keeping it clean...

At times like this you tend to understand those who prefer bare-bottomed tanks with minimal decor...

Sorry, the tank is already stocked, I did think about starting another thread but to save cluttering up the boards I thought I stay with this one, maybe a mod could rename it 'stocking in progress'

Congo tetras and nice looking fish;)

Nothing much to report on the tank, the L190 has taken a huge chunk out of it's head on some wood, but treatment is going well

As you all know I haven't posted lately because I'm on vacation trying to fish myself senseless. Here is a Pleco that I caught yesterday which "L#" is this big boy. Caught this one while casting for bait fish. Would be good size to live with my RTGG's in my 180G, but it's too hot to ship anything home. This would be great for a Pleco tank, there are just millions of these plecos in FL. I've seen them larger than this just didn't have a camera at the time.

I was wondering where you disappeared to

It's a common, L021 or L023 I think, nice fish
