I have recently purchased a 5 x 2 x 2.5 ft tank and I have no idea what to stock it with.:irked:
I have cycled the tank but I am going to buy a better filter, heater, cooler depending on what I decide to stock it with.
It is a freshwater tank
I am a big fan with oddball fish and predators. Any suggestions?
Any species of fw stingray that could go in there with tank mates?
This is my first relatively big freshwater tank so I am out of my element.

Zebra plecos and royal plecos. they are too expensive for my because i am a kid. If I had the money I would probably get one.

dont put any of those on that tank. Upside down cat is not an oddball. In that tank i would go with a smaller stingray, or a lungfish. I would prefer the lungfish and go south american lung as you can keep then with other fish.

Some sort of Piranha (Elong, Rhom, RBPs) or Gars :)
Sorry I don't know much about stingrays, so I can't suggest anything regarding them

If I lived in Canada.. I would go with an Asian Arrowana. From what I understand one would live contently in that tank. could be wrong.. not sure.. otherwise a reticulated ray would be happy in there. otherwise if you want a species tank I would highly suggest a Fahaka puffer.

Say I was going to get a reticulated ray, should/could I add other species that kept to the middle and surface portions of the tank? And are the dimensions wide enough for a reticulated?

Any substrate suggestions if I get a ray? I know minimal decor and I am guessing fine sand is best but is it? I strive to keep my fish the happiest they can be. Thanks for all these replies

Too small for ray (footprint far more important than height), arowanna (arguably large enough for an asian, maybe), far too small lungfish, gar. At least if you do not wish to either give them away before fully grown or are fine with them barely being able to turn around. Generally I would keep away from anything longer than 16" when adult.

Some good oddballs would be a) bichirs b) spiny eels (many macrognathus could work, mastocembelus species arguably grow too large) c) knifefish (arguably, not Clown knives) d) plecos e) sorubim lima f) possibilities are endless, what do you like?
