If your interested in orher fish besides cichlids i would look into polypterus (bichirs)

For me keeping large to med cichlids was/is a pain. It has worked for others so im not trying to discourage you. I keep a group of polypterus in a 150 (badically the same as your tank) with the pearsei and i have 0 issues.

The bichir are pretty cool ,compatibility wise they keep to them selves sort of like an armored catfish? Also which species specifically do you recommend?

Polypterus endlicheri and Polypterus senegalus are in my price range that I have seen.

Yeah they dont bother the other fish. They will eat something thats small enough to fit in their mouth but they arent aggressive. I would stick with upper jaw species like delhelzi, senagalus, buettikoferi, retropinnis, maybe an ornate.

This would all depend on what cichlid you choose. I would think bocourti, pearsei and many of the milder sa's would be fine. I had to put my zonatus in 5he tank with the polys for a couple of weeks and the little 3 inch zonatus shredded the polys fins and all were between 8 and 12 inches.

Have you found a cichlid you like ? If your going to go with bichirs i would stay away from parachromis and vieja's.

I was going to go with a pair of Nicaraguan or severums.

Both are mild mannered enough. I think you will really enjoy this type of set up. Not sure if your willing to pay for ahipping but www.wetspottropicals.com has most of the polypterus we discussed. I've gotten lots of fish from them they are great.

Sens and dels are pretty common the others you may have to either order or hunt them down at lfs
