Hey MFK,
It's been a while, but I think I'm going to (kind of) get back into fish keeping. I originally stopped because I am going to college but I suppose I could have a 2 gallon tank and find a home for the fish easily. Anyway, I am thinking I'll get a single female guppy and see how many babies survive and see how that goes. I'm also considering a single Betta or a Paradise Fish. It's between those three fish. My other concern is filtration. I do not want to buy a new filter for this tank, but I am willing to use my bubbler to keep the water aerated. I'll also be using sand which will allow me to easily siphon debris off the bottom as the sand is very compact. As far as heating, I have a small heater of which I can use. How does this sound and so any of you have any other suggestions? Thanks.:D

Betta. Don't run the bubbler. You won't need a filter. Just keep it bare bones and change the water once weekly.

If theres no filter, the water should be changed daily.
Bubbler isnt necessary, just for decor in this case =)

Heater isnt necessary either, unless your room is very cold. A 2 gallon stays the same temprature as the room its in.

I would just stick to a Betta. You wouldn't need a bubbler with them as they can breathe straight from the top of the tank. Is this a rectangular 2g tank or a hex or a bowl? I would recommend the rectangular one just because it gives more surface space for the fish. I had one while I was away on my internship awhile back. I had a pretty mellow Betta with a few Ghost Shrimp as the clean up crew. Fed them twice a day. And I did a 50% water change every week. It kept me occupied:)

This is a 2 gallon rectangular tank. I really like the idea of having a pure black crowntail betta in the tank. I would also like to have some shrimp, but don't they get picked on by the Betta? I'd love to get some cherry shrimp or something. I may end up planting this tank with some Java ferns/moss and anubias. Thanks.:D

could always rig up a sponge filter. I have a 1/2 gallon tank planted with some compact stem plants and wisteria, currently houses 1 dwarf puffer and 1 orange shrimp. has been working great for months with weekly water changes.

I decided to go to Petsmart today and the look of the Bettas has gotten me away from the idea of Bettas. I am now considering Neon Tetras. How many could I have in a 2 gallon tank, and could I fit in a shrimp to 'clean' up? Thanks.:D

You could have 2, but I woudn't reccomend it.
I would reccomend a CA heavily planted with Swordplants and some mosses, and a pair of Guppies.
Personally, I would try to bump up to a 5 gallon and keep a small shoal of danios with live plants from Asia

If you want an amazing wet pet, throw in a ton of plants and a Freshwater Dwarf Puffer. They are amazing! Two gallons could be enough with plants and regular maintenance.
