Stocking my 2 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Go Monster! Use the 2 gallon for the sump for your new 5 gallon! Just kidding! :D

Guppies or a Betta sounds fine.

Go Indian planted (lightly) with a dwarf puffer and lots of decor for him to explore.

Howbout killis ?
Some of them can be kept in small tanks, and you can buy a bag with eggs and hatch yourself really cheap. And theyre colorfull and purdy like =p

Okay, Neons are out. Where can I get a decent quality dwarf puffer, Petsmart's quality is very poor and would I only get one? I can get a shrimp with the puffer, right?

EDIT: I'm assuming the puffer will have personality right?

I missed my edit chance but I'm also considering Nothobranchius rachovii. Anyone know anything about them?

Shrimps/snails > Bettas

Shrimps and snails are just as entertaining to be honest and they're underrated and more so than bettas. Give them a try and you'll find how much you can enjoy them. One can never have too many invert tanks and a lot of shrimps are in high demand so breeding them is rewarding.

Your tank is too small to allow the shrimps to evade the attacks even if the tank is stuffed with too many plants.

Do tell. What kind can be bred in a 2 gallon, I've always been interested in shrimps but the fact that they are profitable/fun only enhances them!

Cherry shrimps and crystal reds. The latter is a little trickier to keep as they prefer soft acidic water. If you're ready to try the latter, then go for it but they're a tad more expensive than the former and less hardy. Cherry shrimps are easier to breed. Allow 10 of them per gallon and be sure not to overfeed as overfeeding only increases the chances of planaria appearing everywhere and kill the shrimps. There are plenty of shrimp species but most are predatory even with other shrimp species, too big or can crossbreed and not everyone appreciates the hybrid species in the invert world so be careful with what you get. See this chart.

If you want ghost shrimps, be very careful what you get. Most ghost shrimps are not true ghost shrimps at all and these ones do eat snails and other shrimps.

As for snails, if you want to try breeding them, try the colored ramshorns, Thiara winteri and assassin snails (Clea helena). Ramshorns are not a problem to breed however and are available in red, blue, ivory and leopard forms.

The Thiara winteri is a species of trumpet snails that have spines on each whorl. Like other Thiara though, they are asexual but they're not as common as other species of MTS that are known to hitchhike around plants.

As for assassin snails, the ones often sold are still young at half an inch mostly and may take a month to reach full size but that's quicker compared to the newborn ones and they will readily mate in no time provided you are giving them plenty of foods (snail prey). Take note these snails are sexual and therefore need a mate to breed. I haven't figured out the accurate way to determine their sexes although Sounguru, a member of AC explained males tend to be smaller than the females but this wasn't the case with mine. One pair has a male slightly larger than the female. Use the extra MTS and ramshorns as their foods as they prefer slower prey than to chase a bladder snail (Physas sp.) which can easily outrun them. It took me two months before my assassins finally laid eggs. There's no knowing though how many will survive and I haven't figured out how many eggs are laid per snail. Assassins fetch a price of $4 and over depending on Law of Supply and Demand but since 2007, they're still the most often sought after snails and I got mine at $4-7 range since the transportation costs were not excluded.

If in doubt whether assassins are snail safe or not, read here.
