Stocking my 20G

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 20 that I have set up as a "nano" tank with 3 shell dwellers and a xeno.
One of my favorite tanks. Just an idea.... Good luck!

funny, i have a 29g african tank. I have been to 7 LFS, as well as 9 from my home town which is about four hours away. All of the stores I have been to have told me to have at least 7 in my tank since it reduces agression and they chase more than nip. So i finally decided to try it out. What do ya know? They love it, they all paired up, theyre currently 3inches, but are completely enjoying it. I have even had a few stores tell me to put more in. Keep in mind I have two over the back filters, as well as an undergravel, with substrate and powerheads attached, so I do have good filtration. But then again, aquariums come with trial by error, some things work for some that doesn't for others.

You have 7 what? If thats peacocks/aulonocara you will be upgrading to a 6 foot tank sometime soon or you will lose a few to aggression. They aren't as aggressive as mbuna, but in that small of a tank you will see them kill each other off or be badly damaged. Aulonocara shouldn't be kept in anything less what a four foot tank when fully grown They like to have a lot of swimming room.

LFS rarely know what they are talking about.

You have 2 acei, 2 kenyi, 1 peacock and 1 red zebra. Mbuna don't pair up, the are harem spawners, meaning if you only have 2 usually the male will harass the female to death, especially with an aggressive species like Kenyi. Yes malawis WILL kill each other not just chase and nip. Acei get to be 6 inchs long, I have some in my 80 gallon and I think it's too small for them. I believe you haven't seen problems yet since they are only 3 inches and have not hit sexual maturity yet. Once breeding really starts it will be a chaos with no place for the fish to get away from one another.

How many peacocks do you guys think I should go with. I was thinking 5.

One.

Shell dwellers would be cool. I would not consider a 20g for malawi except as a grow out tank.
