i would not recommend the chinese algae eaters. they get to 10" and become agressive and kill tank mates when mature. cool project though. if i had the time, money and another big tank, id like to do a large peaceful tank one day too.

Yeah I agree, I threw out ottos as a possible alternative.

Group of pencilfish would also be cool.
 
I think that would work. I have tetras and angle fish and they live fine. They don't chase or nip at each other.
 
I think a shoal of corydoras schwartzi would be really cool and possibly some sorta gouramis or other small tetras. Maybe some sorats shoul of rainbowfish but it would be safer to go with a smaller species of rainbow =D
 
How about a school of silver dollars?
