stocking my pet store

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
lol already have one its a 220 it has a 13 inch jag a 8 inch dovii and two 15 inch peacock bass and a 8 inch jd and a 9 inch red devil lol yeh it sounds crouded but its really not they all get along fine if i keep them fed constantly lol

I would say do some staple fish, but also some fish that are a little more uncommon. I hardly ever see any of the vieja species in the stores i visit. I think it would be cool to get some herichthys cyanoguttatus never actually seen one in stores. pearsei, Andinoacara stalsbergi

Well some of the more common sales for Cichlid's I would have would be - Angels, Discus, Rams, Oscars, Firemouths, Green Terrors, Paratheraps, Convicts, Texas, Keyholes, Apistos, Jack Dempseys etc... But if you are looking for say 12 unique or 'bigger' species I would consider: (some you have already listed)

Managuense
Motaguense
Dovii
Uaru
Festae
Trimac
Midas
Salvini
Buttikoferi
Electric Blue Jack Dempsey
Chocolate
Ornatum

I think having these Cichlids in your store would be adequate for most hobbyists. Lots of color variety and some of these species you just don't find in your average LFS. Pike Cichlids would be great to have and also, be sure to have certain miscellaneous species of fish that are unique and can possibly be compatible with some of your selling stock. (Prochilodus, Bichirs, Barbs, Loaches, Knifefish, Catfish etc...)

Overall, the best way to ensure sales is to have a variety of species that Fishkeepers of all experience levels and tank sizes can choose from. Best of luck with it!

I've always liked acara, rainbow, and texas cichlids. My lfs or any fish store never have them. I cant find them anywhere.

Something to consider would be peaceful or semi aggressive cichlids like those mentioned and maybe angels or rams. They will appeal to a wider market and would be easier to sell. My go to Lfs does not carry any aggressive cichlids, because lets face it - they may be passionate aquarists but they are businessmen... they special order fish for me but have flat out told me that 95% of their customers are not serious fishkeepers and do not have the interest to research and be able to keep fish outside of a community tank setting. most people cannot justify it.

I don't know where your shop is located, I think alot of stock has to do with the demographics. Is there a large enough base of customers that will seek you out for exotic fish? Or will these cichlids just sit on the shelf like day old bakery?

I know personally i would have a hard time stocking a store for whats good for business versus what I wanted to sell.

I agree. I am sure if people were to see some amazing fully grown tank buster specimens it would really help people get into the hobby and I bet I would have got into it way sooner if I saw some in the flesh when I was starting out.

I guess it depends on what your competition carries. I live in a rural area with only two stores in a sixty mile radius. Both of these stores only carry the common stuff, the exact same species Walmart has. This makes no sense to me. Instead, they should carry the fish Walmart never will have and they should advertise it! Push the unique and unusual, Broadcast the fact you have hard to find or rare fish. People like thinking they have something no one else has.
