Well guys, my water is FINALLY clear from the black sand I put in last week. I swear I rinsed that crap for 4 hours and almost flooded my back yard! Anyhow, I just put in my big chunk of Mopni in there this morning after boiling it all weekend in saltwater. My levels look good, but is there any real way to tell if the bacteria are working? I know they are not ready yet, but is there a test of some kind I can do to tell when they are ready? Hopefully, only a week or so to go before the great fish redistribution!!

A good way to test is put some fish food or some market frozen prawns ect in the tank and see if it causes ammonia...Id add a bit of extra bacteria to help..Just a 5 ml extra :D Got any definitive ideas?

OK. So I finally found a bottle of unscented, uncolored ammonia to help accelerate the process. I forgot to check the label & it turns out it contains a surfactant! Now I have crazy bubbles in the tank & I dont know what to do! Obviously I did more harm than good, but do I need to start over, or is there a way to neutralize the surfactant? In theory, a drop of vegetable oil should neutralize the bubbles, but is that safe? I feel like an idiot.
