Stocking options 75 g malawi

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The canister itself has a really big volume, but the volume of filtermedia you can put on side is much smaller.
Just about 1.5 gallons of whatever you put insinde.
That is where biological filtration happens.
Plus fast moving water through your media is not great fir settling of the benificial bacterias in there.
At least as far as i know

Take out some of the middle sponges.i use 4 trays for bio media. Slow the flow down if you think it's to fast with the fx6. Besides eheim I don't think any brand is anywhere near as good. Your choice. Going to need to move alot of water in a 75 gallon cichlid tank if it's stocked the way it should be. If your looking to use only one canister iny opinion there isn't many canisters out there that will move the amount of water you should be moving.

The fx 6 is not bad at all, but isn' t a lot of media essential to keep nitrate down?
And there's not so much inside that filter.
The mech filtration is really impressive, but kind of overpowered for a 4 foot tank isn' t it?
20 mbuna and five synodontis will produce a lot of waste and I am aiming for 50% wc weekly.
I think eheim was better some years ago, still good, but equal products are available, for much less money.
I like the aquael ultramax 2000, big media volume combined with quite a lot gallons/per hour, even if much less than the fx6.
It is pretty silent and runs on low wattage.
My old eheim will probably not be sufficient, so I am pretty sure to buy another one.

Trust me you can pack the fx6 with bio media, just buy more and Put it in. It comes with 2 bags of rings, I added the equivalent of approx 6 more bags of bio media and still have room for my puragen on the bottom red tray

I run FX6’s and FX4’s. The FX6 can hold a ton. All the media in the world isn’t going to keep your nitrates down. Water changes and keeping your filters clean is going to keep the nitrates down.

Thats right, I was in in struggle with finding correct words.
But the bigger the area where nitrosoma and nitrobacter bacterias live, which are processing ammonia and NITRITE( thats the right term), into nitrate, the better.
So no offense, but all fx6 filters i see online come with 5.9 litres (1.56 gallon) total media capacity.
And that is not big to me.

I have 17 4"-6" cichlids in my 75 growout. With weekly 60% water changes and my fx6 I have under 10 ppm nitrates. I know how to get rid of nitrates. Your the one that kept saying g it doesn't hold that much bio media. If you don't like the fx6 that much then do t K of why u keep asking about it. Seems you have already made your decision

Oh, I never asked for it, just wrote my thoughts because it has been mentioned in this thread.
Still not sure about what filter I will buy, but for sure no fx6 because of the media volume.
