Wow that hardscape looks amazing. The whole cube setup is great.
Pair of acara's should be okay in there. But I would keep an eye on the male. In a 24" tank, pair aggression could be a problem... or it could be fine. Only one way to find out.
Another thing to add, cichlids, especially breeding cichlids, love to dig. If you can't stand the idea of sand being moved around every day due to the scape, I might avoid them.
