perhaps a male only malawi hap/peacock tank, malawi cichlids are quite mellow as long as there are no near identical fish that they percive as competiton, also (n my experience) pretty much unaffected by traffic or external stimulus
A community tank with small fish, such as Cory cats, rams, apistos, schooling tetra, gourami, fancy guppy etc

Fish that people are familiar with... One of the last potential adopters of my foster dog came to my house to meet up with us, and he seemed so proud of himself when (incorrectly) named off the types of fish in the tank in my living room.
I think that people seem to appreciate fish that they are familiar with, more than the rarer type fish...but that's just from my limited experience.

I think you may be right, I'm steering towards a huge school of neons and some blue goramis. Maybe a couple of BN's. People do seem more comfortable with what they know.
