Stocking Piranha in a SA Cichlid Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
no, about an inch a year once they hit the 6-7 inch mark. you're looking at somewhere near 2 years give or take a few months to reach 8 inches but only 8-12 months to reach 6 inches

one of my cariba hit 8" in a little less than a year (9 months i think) but the rest are around 6" or so. reds grow at a similar rate.

Cool, thanks everyone.

Just a little update. I decided I wouldn't have the time to maintain both the piranha and SA tanks, being in university now, so i gave all the fish in my 90g now, and i mean all of them, to a friend of the family that has a hugeeee (HUGEEE!!!) cichlid collection.
So I picked out 6 quarter sized RBPs from the lfs this morning, along with 2 dozen feeder guppies just incase they decided to be picky eaters. They took out 1/4 of those in the first 30min, and theyve taken bloodworms as well. Really fun little guys! I think im going to like them. My roommate threw in a chunk of honey ham and apparently they ate that too. :/

On a side note, is there a rule against feeding piranha cooked food? Like cooked fish or cooked shrimp...or cooked ham? Or does everything have to be raw

it willl make the water stinky of you feed foods like that also i dont think its very healthy

also in a 90g tank, dont be suprised if only 4 make it past maybe 3 inches. always buy more than you want to keep because they will pick off one or 2 weaker fish usually

honey ham~!?? I'd beat the crap out of that dude if he was my roommate, lol but that might get you into trouble but still warn him not to do it again.
it will foul your water if you don't clean them up fast and is unhealthy for fish.
give them cooked food is a no no, they can eat it but it won't be healthy for them. good read here on what to feed your piranhas.

at the size they are at, feed frequent as they grow very fast and needs a lot of food.
feed 2-3 times a day (or 4 if you can) with what they can finish up in few minutes. remove any uneaten food afterward. as they get bigger you can slowly cut back on the feeding to once a day, once every other day so they don't get obese.
I never lost any reds regardless in big tank or small tank. I once had 7 in a 40g all lived and even had breeding pairs. but that could be just my luck.
caribas were a different story. :)

feeding them ham is not a good idea. while they're still young u should try getting them on pellets. ever since ive gotten my Ps on pellets they have became a lil more colorful and its also cheaper.

i once gave 5 piranhas a hot dog so i could take it out and see their bite marks. half hour later they spit the entire hot dog out. i had to scoop out like 30 pieces
