My boyfriend and I currently have a 150gal discus tank. We are thinking of going in a different direction, and going with CA/SA cichlids. If we were to get rid of the discus, would it be possible to have a pair of Uarus, a pair of what I think are Atabapo Severums, and a trio of jurupari? Do you think they would all get along fine, or would there be major issues? All thoughts and opinions are welcome. Will be going back to lfs within a few days to get pics to positively id the severums and jurupari. Thanks in advance!

A 150 might be pushing it for all those fish to be honest. Uarus like to be in groups to be honest (3+) and they actually do school in those groups, but the problem is they can get large also. Maybe just go with the Uaru's and maybe a couple sev's for contrast in color or maybe some Uaru's with a nice school of tetras with them. I'm in the process of getting some for my 180 i just set up myself and picking up a 220 tomorrow also and going to divide if necessary.

It is a lot for a 150G, once they are all full grown. Uaru are social fish, but keeping them in a pair is usually just fine. If they are a good size, then uaru usually adapt very well to being the only one also.
Only get a pair of sevs if they are a known pair. In a 150G, the chances are that if you just put in largish male and female sevs, they will more likely fight than pair up.
Personally I'd go for 2 x uaru & one sev.

3 x jurupari (or whatever species you actually get), is a bad number and you are very likely to get a very picked on 3rd fish. The other two may or may not get on well either. I know it's not usually recommended around here but I've always found that a singelton jurupari gets on very well in a community cichlid tank. Otherwise, get at least 5 to spread bickering. And they get to be big fish so 5 is a LOT of biomass to go with the other fish in a 150G.

Just so you can get an idea of what might work, in my 150G I have 2 x uaru, 1 x sev, 1 x angelfish, 1 x moonlight gourami, 1 x tanganyikan spiny eel and a few other platies and bleeding heart tetras. That works really well, and I would not want to put any more fish load in there personally.

+1 on the Jurapari advice. If you get 3, two of them will pick on the smallest one, till its dead, then the biggest one will pick on the begger one. Generally 6 is the number to disperse agression. So eithier keep a single one or a large group.

Thanks for all the input guys :) It looks like I'll be going with 1 sev and 1 jurupari. I already have the pair of uarus, and they are by far my favorite fish in the tank. I like the discus, but personality wise, the uarus have them beat. On a side note, the jurupari are going for $6 for about a 2.5-3 incher. Is that a good price?

If they are true jurupari then it's a good price! I can't even find any jurupari in memphis :(
& why don't you try a chocolate instead of a severum?

Chocolates are more aggressive with their own kind than other cichlids...Kinda like oscars.

Uarus like to be in groups to be honest (3+) and they actually do school in those groups,

I disagree. When young they prefer to be in groups, but from my experiences raising several different sized groups they aren't going to suffer if you only keep two, and as adults they will do fine alone. Three is probably the worst number you could keep, chances are you'll end up with a pair and an extra who gets picked on every time they spawn. I'd suggest either two or 5+.

I think 2 uaru, 3 jurupari and 2 sevs will be fine in a 150g (presuming we're talking about a 5x2x2 and not one of those silly tall narrow ones), its certainly not heavily stocked, I'd consider adding a few small-med sized plecs and maybe a school of larger bodied tetras.
