If you want to mix, try this:

1 green terror
1 pair of jewel fish
6 yellow lab
6 p acei
3-4 male peacocks of your choice or even ob peacocks if you don't mind hybrids
A group of synodontus multipuntatus

Lots of color, should have minimal aggression

I love that mix. Any fish I could sub for the terror? I hv a GT in the other tank- I love him, but I'd like this tank to be different. I thought about an electric blue jd but those suckers are hard to find. Especially hard if you want them at a decent size.

Well it's really up to you. A Texas should work. EBJD especially when small, is a little too delicate. If your tank was a little bigger I would suggest Vieja sp. but I think your tank is a little too small.

I just visited the LFS and saw a great variety of africans - i was starting to get excited about them. I was settling in on aceis, yellow labs, peacocks, clown loaches and a synodontis to go with either a terror or EBJD (if I could find one big enough). there were a few other african varieties that i liked (kribensis, lamp brichardi, etc.) - but then i got to talking about the rocks.

i was unaware how expensive they would be. i was told that it would be a couple of hundred dollars at least. jeebus.

got me reconsidering - i'm most likely going ahead with it - but still... what would a plan B look like? (a plan B that doesn't involve spending an extra $400 on magic african rocks.)

Actually those fish don't need that much rocks. You need some but not that much. P acei is open water, only yellow labs like rocks and if you only get 6, 2-3 small mounds is all you need.

Just don't get any more Mbunas.

yeah - i think i was told it could get to 300 or 400. i trust the guy telling me this - i'm sure he wasn't trying to rip me off - i'm just confused.

I do not think you need that many rocks...what you can do is use a few river rocks and get two piles...that should be sufficient for the yellow labs...others on your list don't need that much rock.
