Stocking suggestions - 300 gal

If you have to view them from above you will want the fish to either be really bright or really big. That leaves midas/red devil for the bright ones or Pearsi's, Bocourti's, Jags, and Dovi's for the big ones. For south american fish you can't go wrong with oscars. I would put a pair of peacock bass and a tiger shovelnose or lima shovelnose.

Thanks to all for the info. Lots to consider here. I've got some time to figure this out, as our air temps have dropped like a rock in the past couple of days. Water temps still at 72+, but may end up in the 68 range before this cold snap is over.

Currently have a large group of jd's breeding in another small pond, and recently lost an old friend orange midas, 10+ years old. I think going mellower would be my best bet, but the allure of a temensis or dovii is too much to rule out. Could either of these be paired in a 300gal? Or is that just not enough space for more than one? Are there likely to be compatability issues with the marble cat with these brutes, since he is definitely staying.

Severum Guy - have never kept severums before. How are they for visibility from above? Some of the wild type individuals on Rapps site are just amazing looking, but will I ever see them?

Thanks again everybody for all your insight.

A dovii would most likely kill a peacock bass or most anything else in only 300g. Severums have a skinny top profile and are mostly green so I wouldn't think they would be very visiable at all unless you went with the super red ones. I'm don't know anything about the marble cat. How big do they get and are they aggressive? You could also look at maybe an arowana. It would look great and be extremely visable.

If you definately want CA cichlids I would think a dovii pair or a pair of jags and a red devil or 2 would be your best bet. If you want something else an arowana and maybe 2 peacock bass and your catfish would be pretty darn cool as well.

i guess the severums are ruled out, not much to see from above.

marble cat - pimelodid type s am cat, perunichthys perruno (sp??), or similar species with different dorsal fin ray counts. my previous ones have been about 2' long and always hungry. not aggressive, but can get freaky in smaller tanks (less than 2 ft wide) if its barbels always touch sides.

i like the arowana idea, maybe a large silver. the only species we're allowed to have here in fl. would need to find a way to keep them in the water, not on the lawn. could match well with a few oscars. this has possibilities.

would a pair of p bass likely be visible in a pond with about 50% surface plant coverage? i never see my jds (in a similar pond) except at feeding time.

good advice c.a.

i think if i go aggressive it might be cyanogutatum or carpintis, then i can keep the temps reasonably low, say 72+ in winter. maya's are really intense, could go with the texas types also, imo. could take a field trip and collect some!

i like the idea of bocourti, but have no experience with them. will do some searching here on the forum to see what they are like. my citrinellum and maculicauda always seemed to hate it when temps dropped below 74ish.

if i go arrowana then temps will need to be a bit higher. did some reasearch on cichla and they seem to like 80's also. that would be hard/impossible to maintain in my pond in winter.
