HI Everyone...

Need some good suggestions for a 38g. I'm currently housing 6barbs and two SAE.

Can someone suggest good combinations to go with these? Boyfriend insists on bala sharks (2), I've already warned him we will probably be needing a bigger tank in the near future to house 'em.

Love gouramis but are a bit concerned if the barbs would make good companions...i've heard they will generally leave the other fish alone if in a school of six or more????

Any suggestions welcome!

Firemouths.

oh wait, i didnt see that you already had tiger barbs, if there was nothing in it, id say exodons, but i agree with firemouths. they are small cichlids but very tough

if you want gouramis they would be ok if you have enough tiger barbs because they may nip

but firemouth, and like 2 corys

Exodons???....wait...aren't they a type of Pirahna? Eeekkk...I'd be thrown in the clinker we aren't allowed to keep pirahna in Australia.

Firemouths and cory's sound cool though

(please correct me if I'm wrong on the exodon thing...I'm only new to fish keeping )

you arent far off, and im not sure if they are illegal in australia or not. they are not piranhas, but they are one of the only species that can be kept with piranhas. they are tetras.

are the barbs you have indeed tiger barbs?

firemouths would probably be fine. you could get around 6 or so and let a pair form, but then you'd need to get rid of the 4 extras. if you add corys I'd suggest you add more than just 2. the more you add the safer they'll feel and the more active and playful they'll be. I'd go for around 8 corys if you're going to get some. :) also, make sure there are plenty of hiding places for the firemouths retreat to should the feel shy and also for the corys to hide in.

Ohhhh they're tetras? I know we have some tetras available here but not sure about exodons.

Yes, my barbs are tiger I have 2 normal tiger, 2 green variant and 2 albino....

I am thinking maybe I should trade the barbs in???? Would this make it easier to stock the tank?

well if you were to have an exodon tank, you couldnt really have anything else in there. they are fin nippers. think tiger barbs on steroids as far as fin nipping goes. they are pretty ferocious eaters. im picking some up next week for a 30 gal. tank.
