Most characins are tetras, it is just a a common term generally used to describe smaller, tropical characidae. Piranha, payara, and pacus could be included as in the tetra group.
You could try a small group of german rams or cockatoo apistogrammas. Or since you are from Oz you could try Nannoperca australis (dwarf perch) 3", Nannoperca variegata (Golden dwarf perch) 2 1/2", Pingalla gilberti (Gilbert's grunter) peaceful 4", Mugilogobius wilsoni (Wilson's goby) 1 3/4", Pseudomugil cyanodorsalis 1 1/2", or maybe some of the many ambassidae perchlets.

Thanks heaps everyone! Certaintly helps me out, I'll check on the exodons, if not those probably the firemouths or perch's as suggested :D

for the record, if guppy has advice, he is usually correct. if you want predators, get a school of exodons. if you want pleasant fish to look at, which exodons are as well, get the fish guppy showed you.

Suck up, LOL.

it would definatly make it easier to stock the tank, but if your looking for a smaller cichlid thats pretty cool. maybe a small spot madagascar cichlid (polleni). imo it's just an a really cool fish
