Stocking suggestions for a 40g? Looking for Monsters

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Okay, so I've come to a decision. i just ordered 6 juvenile 1-2" herotilapia multispinosa, taking combined advice from enjoyable_attempt and then from Retuks. These guys get to a good 5-6" (large enough for me, esp since there are six) and change colors from flourescent yellow to orange, to red, to black when spawning. And i also ordered 1 juvenile 2" ebjd. Now, I realized that this will seem overstocked in the future, but for now (all fish under 2.5") will be okay? The herotilapia are considered "peaceful" in nature, as with the ebjd according to my research and advice from Retuks so do you think they will be okay together for a while (year or two)?

BTW, i was torn between the herotilapia and a sen bichir, but i figured that if i could get these guys to breed, i'd eventually make up the money i spent on them, whereas the sen bichir may just hide in the corner and be the exact opposite of a show tank fish.

Any comments?

great choice... where did you order the herotilapia multispinosa from?

i suggest a few cichlids of varietyin color. maybe 3 or 4 of them, then a pleco for some sanitation. in a 40 gallon you cant really have a monster fish.........sorry

Any suggestions for a pleco that won't eat fry? or harrass the fish?

belay that order from "a pleco for sanitation"... LOL. a vegetarian one will keep you from having to clean the glass but that has nothing to do with sanitation. its just another mouth to feed. unless you want one.

Oh and about the 6 rainbows in the 40gal. It won't work out for 1 whole year unless you feed them LFS style (borderline starved). not to mention they are 6 same species cichlids in 36". watch for female/male ratio.

and above all else. i hope you aren't buying them all from the same store/selection? just trying not to promote inbreeding because alot of mindless grannys out there buy a group of oscars etc from the same cubical with plans to breed them. which is why we have very low value deformed and weak fish with un-even mouths in every lfs.

breeding all 6 for proffit might end up costing more than your gonna make. especially if you get them as babies. you gotta feed them for months and months and months until they are full grown, which means you can't avoid an upgrade and lfs don't give you much money for spawns.

but really, in the game of fish keeping. why not keep the fish your truly want instead of waste time to profit from caring for fish you may not like that much? besides a job or business is better than making fish at home. the fish are supposed to be your playtime, cleaning and all. a bichir could be your best pall and definitally turn more heads for the average joe whos never owned a fish in their life. proffit from enjoyment at the tank.

:iagree: My 2 sens are far from "hiding in the back" Most my fish will hide including my Oscar from new people. But not my 2 Sens! or the TT in the tank with them! and they are in a bottom tank to the side.. They always generate the most interest when I show people my collection. My best friends son at 5 loves feeding my fire eels though. They now come out flitting around everytime they see him. He thinks it's alot of fun to feed them worms. lol. My sens gotta check out everyone new, very fearless buggers. and of course hoping for an extra treat. GL w/ the cichlids. they are usually a good choice for interactive, once they settle in and know not to fear their owner. never kept rainbow's before though. and of course.. we want pics when you get them settled in ;)

yah. and keep in mind, alot of people (kids especially) that you introduce your tank to will start looking in your nooks and crannies to try and find an unusual fish right off the bat. especially if your tank has alot of decor to provoke them to explore it a bit.

They will then say "mommy mommy look at this cool dragon thingy i found!" :). and you will be twice as proud.
