I have a 120 gallon (4x2x2) with a FX5 (900gph give or take) and a 650gph wet/dry on it.

I definitely want to get at least 1 oscar. First, if I decide to keep just oscars, what is the maximum number of oscars that is appropriate for that size tank with that filtration? Also, if I decide to go the community tank route...what are some suitable tankmates for oscars? I have had Africans for years, but don't have any experience with South Americans...so your replies are much appreciated.

Thank You!

I have a Jack Dempsey and firemouth with my Oscar as well as a salvini in a 90G tank.
I have been told here to watch the salvini but so far so good. I hear severums work well.

with large water changes i'd say you could get away with 3 oscars in there for life

community
cichlids would be ( convicts , firemouths, jackdempsys ,green terror ( mabye a little agressive) severums, parrots pretty much any cichlid that isn't to aggressive

of couse theres other fish to like catfish, polypterus, barbs, eel type fish

:iagree: 3 Oscars would be max.
i %100 disagree, A SINGLE OSCAR needs at least 55 gallons! this is for teratory for a oscar and when they get fully growen its enough water to dilute water. 2 oscars need 110 gallons! and a 6 ft tank becasue when they hit sexual maturity they get agressive to there owen kind, they are not a schooling fish they would perfer to be only with them selfs and no other oscars. if your oscars are peacefull you might getaway with 2 oscars in a four ft tank. if you chose to have 1 oscar(witch is the smart thing to do) you could get a jack dempsey or a few silver dollers or a pleco or somthing like that. i had to oscars in a 4 ft tank and i was told it was fine, and they almost killed each other one day. iam talking though experince and if you had 3 oscars in that size tanks will run into problums, also with 3 oscars to will kill one, and later the other to might kill each other for room, no matter what i say it your call but you will need a 6 ft tank to havce to happy oscars, they dont relly need a tall or wide tank they need a long tank for terrortory. trust me, it has happend to me and many others who made the mistake of to many oscars.
any qestions

Baby Oscars love to hang out in a crowd swimming back and forth like a little gang… they’re so cute…

But they outgrow that stage. As adults they don’t like other Oscars being around unless they are mating with it.

So if you take the above advice and get 3 Oscars… then mathematics will show it is probable to get a male and a female in the bunch… and if they pair off… that third Oscar is screwed…

If you get 3 Oscars and they all turn out to be males… I would predict the two toughest would fight and fight probably until the death of the subdominant. Then the smallest would either live his life in the top corner of the tank in complete fear… or fight back and get killed…

I have 3 Oscars and a handful of other Cichlids in a 6’ round 300 gallon. Two ended up becoming a pair and the odd ball male spends the week before and the week spawning hiding on the far side of the tank in a pot coming out only to eat. Fortunately my female is sterile and the eggs never hatch or the aggression would be too constant and I would have to change something.

I share your passion for Oscars, but in my experience it takes a big d@mn tank to keep multiple Oscars together long term without problems.

I also have a 4x2x2 120 and it’s a beautiful tank. In my opinion the best use of such a tank is for a large growing pair. I just picked up some Wild Trimacs for mine.

If your committed to keep an Oscar in the mix I suggest limiting yourself to one. Then you will have space to add a couple other tank mates. I would suggest one other bigger Cichlid (JD, GT, etc) and 2~3 smaller growing Cichlids (FM, Con, Acara, etc).

Thank you all for your feedback...it is certainly more info than I can get from any of my lfs in the area. I can't seem to find a really good one here in South Jersey.
