Id do a nice planted tank with a group of Apistos (whichever you can obtain in your area) with a large school of RummyNose Tetras, and a shoal of Corydora Sterbai.

Id do a nice planted tank with a group of Apistos (whichever you can obtain in your area) with a large school of RummyNose Tetras, and a shoal of Corydora Sterbai.
Unless your wife is an avid fishkeeper that understands the reasoning/ importance of weekly water changes, temp, ph, diet & disease then Id stay away from dwarf cichlids. They arent as simple/hardy to take care of as the smaller non dwarf cichlids. Basically way more of a PITA and super sensitive to temp/ph/dietary changes than "normal" cichlids as well...all things that can happen in a simple water change, if you dont know what youre doing.
Wife/GF & Aquarium = disaster with non hardy fish IME, which then turns into a loss of interest...unless its a woman completely interested in biology etc.

but yeah he has a point, the dwarf cichlids are definitely more high maintenance, rams maybe more so than apistos but still alot can go wrong with these guys without realizing it until its to late if your not sure in what your doing, i would stick with dwarf pikes, sajicas or HRPs and then do tetras to fill it out more and maybe some cories for the bottom, if you wanted to do angelfish i would just do a pair in a 40g and dont do neon tetras as this is their natural prey in the wild and they will be eaten once the angels are full grown

i was just speaking from my personal experiences with that subject
and it can be as much if not more a problem with guys and non-hardy fish...especially so because of a genetic disorder that prevents us from acknowledging we could be wrong about anything...or using/ asking for directions!
She is pretty bio minded but some more hardy type fish would be better. Any suggestions for easier care? I will be the one doing the water changes for the most part and it would be nice to have a setup that would not crash if I miss a week.
Just have a Blue acara and some good size tetras.But i dont think a blue acara can be housed in 40g idk.
