Water parameters? Are you willing to upgrade eventually? For schooling, do you want medium or small sized fish. You could go planted with a large school of cardinal tetras.

right now the tank is empty so no water parameters. no big upgrades in the near future. id like to have medium sized fish

The oscar is probably the most personable fish out there. But the midas is not far behind.

You could do smallish SA/CA cichlids, I have a 75 gallon. I have a Salvini, Convict, Firemouth, and 2 Blue Acaras. They all have personality.

Blue acaras are nice, they have the look of a green terror but much less aggressive.
