Stocking the tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you could add multiple HOB overflows, and using a couple of sumps. Im not sure what max GPH is on the largest CPR overflow box but you'll want to turnover a good amount of water. IMO id say no less then 3000 gph. thats a bit more then 13 times turnover excluding any sumps being used.

Thanks for the tips and advice guys. Due to the price of finishing up everything with the tank and the possible costs of moving, I will just be buying a third canister filter, a hang on protein skimmer, and I will be up grading to a 36 watt UV. I also found a 4 foot light that has 4 54watt HO 10k lights, 4 actinic lights, and 4 lunar lights. I do not plan on more than one or two corals, which will be situated directly under the light, so a 72" light will be skipped. Additionally, when I have the funds to up grade I will likely go halide, so I didn't see the need to spend all the extra money on the lights quite yet. I will also be buying another 50-100lbs of live rock to finish up the decor. Everything is on hold for now as we are waiting on a house purchase (the seller's bank must approve because it's a short sale). I figure another $1500.00 for the aforementioned items and then I can get down to adding the fish; which of course leads me to another question. Depending on the collection point the price of a fish can greatly vary. For example two similiar sized Imperator angels can vary from $330 for one collection point and $775 at another. Is the color intensity really that different to pay the extra cash? or is an Imperator a Imperator?

Ok, I spent all day (practically) just reading and have changed my mind yet again.:D I will not be adding another canister as I have found that you do not want additional bio filtration via. a canister only water movement; hence the 2 powerheads. So to lay it all out this will be my tank.

220 gallons (unfortunately not reef ready :nilly:)
1 eheim 2262 900gph canister filter
1 fluval fx5 rated @ 900gph (probably a little less in reality)
2 850gph powerheads*
1 300watt heater (which has always been plenty to keep the tank 78+ in my house)
20 watt UV sterilzer
crushed agronite gravel
~180lbs live rock (I currently have 80lbs and do not want too much swimming space for the fish to be lost) *
Metal halide lights 3x150watt 14k HQI-MH w/ 24 Lunar lights*
RO/DI unit for water
* - not purchased yet

Would this be good to go? Sorry for changing up so much but, this stuff is expensive and I want to waste as little $$$ as possible.

do you plan on having this tank be a reef? And what are your plans for a protein skimmer?

I guess some beginner level corals, and perhaps an anemone. Oops, I forgot to list that I will be running a hang-on skimmer.:D

Well I bought a lot of stuff tonight. I did but another fish, which I know I shouldn't have, but this blue demsel for only $3.99 was such a steal :D.
