hey guys, i have just returned to the hobby and have a 260 gal tank which i have set back up aswell as a 75 gal grow out. in my larger tank I currently have a 15" giraffe cat, a 12" six bar distichodus and a 10" ripsaw. the grow out contains a 4" clown knife and a 3 1/2" ornate bichir. these 2 will be added to the big tank when they are 8" or so. so my question is what else would you guys add to the tank? I am willing to thin stocking out as the fish grow. my initial thoughts are possibly peacock bass, arrowana or more polypterus. does anyone have any other suggestions?

Depends on the dimensions, the ripsaw will probably outgrow that tank

Welcome back☺ I personally would add more polypterus.

In nature, the ripsaw can reach 47". The giraffe (59"), clown knife (50"), and arowana (47").

Even if they only grow to half their length in nature, which they should exceed in captivity if they are well cared for, none of them can fit in a 30" wide tank.

The six bar distichodus also reaches 39".

Let's say that those 5 fish above, (we are excluding the ornate bichir, peacock bass, or more polypterus), do reach 1/2 their potential length.

They will weigh 31 pounds, and assuming typical (average) feeding, will generate 43 ppm of nitrate every 24 hours. The tank would need two 100% water changes per day or (I'm guessing) 1,000 gallons of daily auto drip to keep overall nitrates at around 20, assuming the tap water has zero nitrates.

Great point ☺ Tbh didn't think about the nitrates they would produce.

Okay, So those might need moving on sooner rather than later! Any suggestions for fish more suitably sized that can live with the polypterus? And possibly peacock bass?
