That sounds amazing to me.Big tanks are not just for big fish.
I'm totally on board with what you are saying about scale,something often overlooked.
Just think of the intricate scape you could have.
Think I would add a massive shoal of one species of tetra.
If you go down this road, I for one will be envious when it's finished I'm sure.

I have my paradise fish in my 70 temporarily and he uses up that tank. If there weren't growing polypterus in there he'd be a permanent resident

This. I love the sounds of your other option, and totally agree with the concept, but damn I hate parting with adult cichlids. I have seen some beautiful adults of mine killed by ignorance before they even made it out of the LFS. If I couldn't find the bifa a good home, I would keep him. Good luck with your decision.

Very true.I found this on recently with those melanura I had, you may remember?

Thanks for all your opinions, lots of food for thought. Part of this came about because I have put new flooring down in the rest of the house and cannot put of doing the front room any longer, while I am taking the tank down I thinking of swapping filtration over to hmf, so I know I will have to find temporary housing for him which isn't to much of a problem, keeping all the tank decor and filter media ticking over so I don't crash the cycle when I set it back up is.

Why not keep the big guy and give the sword tails a try with him or maybe some tetras . If it doesn't work out then you can still find him a home and do the biotope tank your talking about. But I would give it a shot before I got rid of him a lot of big guys will just ignore small fish.

Either oprion would be cool. I always wanted to try a big tank with smaller community type fish. I think that would look amazing......but sometimes we have fish that are just too hard to part with. I wanted to rehome the pearsei more times than i could remember and like you im limited in how many tanks i can run. Its a tough call and if it werent for the wife and kids i may have sent him packing a long time ago...and most likely would have regretted it haha
