I am going to be purchasing either a 12 or 22 gallon long and I was wondering what type of cichlids I could keep with dithers such as salt and pepper corys and tetras. Any suggestions would be welcome could be 1 cichlid or a pair.

A pair of rams would be happy in 22gal, and leave room for some dithers.

I was thinking about them or apistos but I dont want fry out of the wazoo which comes with apistos so I am leabing towards rams but who knows maybe some other type of cichlid will take their place.

I am looking at maybe a pair of dwarf pike cichlids any ideas on that?

Dwarf pike would be ok. I would ditch the 12 gallon plans completely though and go with the 22

Even in the 22, dwarf pikes would be difficult unless just going one. But then you can kiss any smaller tetra goodbye.

Keyhole cichlids, or cupido cichlids, should be fine in a 22 gallon in a pair.
Rainbow cichlids probably fine as well.
Or a single male of a showy crpytoheros species would be fine. If you are in NJ you can have one of my extra male panamensis.

I would agree. Dwarf pikes need at least a 36” tank.
