Laetacara, apistpgramma, microgeophagus, crenicara, cleithacara, discrossus would all work.

If you’re not insistent on it being SA, you can try pelvicachromis, nanochromis, or anamalochromis species.

I decided not to go with pike cichlids because I would feel bad with them not being able to use all of their energy my dream tank still is a massive biotope with a pair of Crenicichla lugubris. I am now thinking about west african cichlids or a small species of acara or a pair of HRP's. I really want that "personality" which the bigger cichlids have but a house from 1860 wont support a tank of that size on a second floor.

Maybe even a mud turtle 'heheh'

I hope you are considering C compressiceps, which is still a bit large for the tanks you suggest.
One thing to consider with pike cichlids in a small space, make sure they are comparable in size, because larger ones will eat their smaller brothers and sisters.
I picked up a bag of 10 C sp. belly crawlers at a gcca cichlid auction, all between 1" & 2" and put them in a 6 ft 100 gallon tank to grow out, within a week only the two largest were left, and each had quite full bellies.

The slightly larger male the ate the other a few weeks later, being male he grew faster.
A friend who also picked up a bag of 10 at the same auction, also ended up with 1.
They never bothered other higher bodied cichlids, but any similar long cichlid seemed to be looked at as a meal.

I was considering them but now the stress that would put me and the fish through keeping a pair in a 22 gallon would be to much so now I am looking at something like a pair of small Hemichromis, Krib, or HRP.
