how difficult are these to find for the average hobbyist and if it is possible at what sort of price? i think they are very interesting and look amazing and would be interested in hearing what they are like from people that have kept them

They are one of my favorite mini predators, but as to their availability in Scotland, don't know.
Here in the US they have been sporadically available through breeders, but I have never seen them in LFSs.
I had a breeding group about 10 years ago, and just returned to them by getting a group of juvies from dogofwar. I find them difficult to photograph.

a couple phone shots from 10 years ago

a group of baby guppy size fry spit into a net

gorgeous fish! how aggressive are they? the fish selection here isn't great but i may see if any of the LFS can order them in(probably not)

At max size of about 7"-8" the males can be hard on females in 6ft tanks, but they seem to ignore other, none similar fish. Males would sometimes court to such an extent that they would drive females (and other competing males) right out of the tank.
I have a pair of 3" pindu in a 50 gal at the moment, with 5 Sarotherodon linnelli (@5") that are vaguely similar in appearance, and 3 Synodontus catfish and there seems to be a bit of non-lethal sniping, but nothing serious. 10 years ago I housed them with dissimilar shaped central Americans

I blacked out some background in the pic below, otherwise the pindu simple blended away

they are great looking fish but im not sure id get them in my area one day maybe... i dont suppose you know of any similar west africans?

One of the reason I keep them is that S. pindu are such unique creatures.

I've males grow to 7-8" but they'll breed at 4" or so.

I think I've given away, donated or traded dozens and dozens in the past few years (they have relatively small spawns, in my experience).

The ONLY wild locale for these guys is a single crater lake (Barombi-Mbo) in Cameroon, so their existence (along with all of the other Barombi-Mbo endemics) is precarious.

I hope that there are folks in Europe breeding them. If not, I'm happy to donate some if you can find someone to handle the shipping and permits.

Matt

My group of 7 is from Matt (dogofwar) as well. They're about seven months old, so they are under 2.5 inches. They will eat anything and are not shy at all. I haven't observed aggression since they haven't reach breeding age, but there is a clear hierarchy. Planted tanks and really good water quality are great for this endangered species. I wish you luck in obtaining a group. I've posted a few threads on them in this forum that may be of interest.
