Stone background

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I really hope this is successful. I am building a 6X6 out of used 200's and have been trying to figure out a good background. I was goung to use foam rocks, but that will be a pain to clean algae from. This will be like cleaning rock! LOL

First link worked for me... might have to stop in at my local Lowes and see what other styles they have... I seem to remember some kind of lightweight 'stone look' siding material at Menards, but don't recall what it was made from...

That stuff is a concrete product. Some of it may even be open or closed cell foam, with tinted stucco over it. I would suspect that it may be treated to prevent termite/insect infestation.

And more than likely treat = toxic to fish, correct?

I would think that any type of termite treatment would be toxic to fish.

To be clear what I installed is natural stone, it looks to be slate.

I plumbed the tank and filled it up, here is final result.

I will let the water sit overnight then drain it and put fish and plants in it.

Just in case you are wondering what my filtration set up is:

fluval 205,
Auto drip @ 10 gal per day, with overflow.
I have the filter return rigged to a valve so i can fill the tank by opening a valve.

Fish and plants have been in the tank for about 30 hours. Fish is acting normal, he even ate this morning.

I will post again in a few weeks and give an update, but it looks like this stuff works out as a background.

If I had to do it over again, I would put a bevel on the tile so that it can meet the glass a little cleaner (the silicone seal keeps it off).

I am about a week in, no signs of any sort of toxicity.

I had a minor bacteria bloom, lasted about 2 days, then cleared up.

Unless I something goes wrong or there are any questions I will probably not post again.
