Monoculus ;)
I have a huge tire track couple years ago that would always climb into my emperor 400 filter, and would constantly have to remove the filter and dump him back in.

I just picked up a small fire eel last week, and it does the same thing!

I have plenty of hiding spots for him, and even put a pipe in the tank but he still climbs out.

I can't figure out how to stop this frmo happening. I have a glass top with the plastic stuff off the back, but he just climbs into it somehow

My fire eel tries to get into the output tubes of the FX5's, but they are too small, but he can definitely even fight the flow of that. The only thing I can think of is siliconing a grate/mesh perpindicular to the little "waterfall" output on HOB's.

Get a new filter. I have some for sale.

Nahhh. just playin.

For real though, you might try to use some plastic grated type stuff they use in dishwashers for the silverware so it doesn't get all in your plates and stuff.
silicone it to the return and make sure it's flush with the lid.

Otherwise, I really don't know. To be honest, I made up that solution off the top of my head. Let me know how it works for you.

hrmm...ill give it a try

Cool. Let me know what happens. Cause I hate it when my silverware gets all up in my plates and stuff. Everybody knows silverware & plates don't cohabitate in the wild, and it sounds like the same problem with your eel & filter so I guess it just came natural to me.

Mines used to do the same into my emperor 400. What I did was lower the water level about 2 inches below the spill way. Now that my fire has grown some he doesn't do it anymore and I have my water level back up.

I have the same situation. Even at 16", my Tire Track was still swimming under the biowheels and into the filter area of my Emperor HOB. I used plastic hardware cloth from Lowe's. I just cut it to a size that I could wedge into the spillway behind the biowheels. The mesh is large enough not to inhibit water flow. So far has worked like a charm.
I tried dropping the water level, but he stiil managed to get in with it even two inches lower. I didn't like the splash zone it caused on the top glass either.
Good Luck!
