And here I was thinking my eel was a master escape artist. I have the exact same problem as you, except my eel is only about 7" at the moment. Emperor 280 filter though, however if I moved him to my 125 I'm sure he'd do the same to my 400's.
@prskiller; I'd say you're lucky if that worked to stop yours, mine is clearly insane. Even when my water-level drops below the filter, he jumps out and wedges himself into the overflow part of the filter, and wriggles his way into the filter. When the water level is above the filter line though, he swims up to it and tail-stands on the small ledge, poking his head up and under the bio-wheel and wriggles in.
I've seen him go in (and heard him, as my filter starts sounding like its low on water when he enters for some reason), and for a while I was chasing him out of my filter with the reverse end of my net. Now, he does it so often I've just given up and let him have his private apartment in my tank. He's gone in and out on his own so many times, I think he'll be alright (until he's bigger at least). I just pray he never reaches the impeller
