Anyone ever use store bought sponges like the large kind you wash your car with for your sump? Seems like it might work and be cheaper than the fish store bought foam/ sponge.

Any thoughts / experiences?

i once used sponges from home depot in my sump under my pumps to stop vibration and they ended up braking down in the water. they were made for grouting floors. not to sure about car wash sponges tho

Not all sponges are created equal. Sponges made for aquarium use tend not to break down quickly when submerged in water. However, you may find some other types of sponges that will work in aquariums. Just make sure they have no chemicals added to them.

Yes I have tried normal sponges for scrubbing dishes and they broke down but at my dollar store I found a 12 pack of small foam sponges and they work great. I can go on my phone and post a picture if you want. I use them as my mechanical filtration but they probably grow a lot of bacteria on them too.

If you're looking for a cheap alternative for mechanical filtration then look into quilt batting and pillow stuffing from the craft store. It's extrememly cheap so when it gets dirty you just throw it away and put fresh in. If you're going to use the sponge as bio-filtration then the pot scrubbies from the dollar store work great and many people use them with success.
