some of the stores around here are better then others (as us know radley)......i've only had two real problems at stores......one was at petco where they wouldn't sell me clown loaches cuz the thought my 46 gallon was too small (they were 3 inch clown loaches) and another was at a LFS where i told a lady not to buy jack dempseys for her ten gallon, i got kicked out cuz they said i was loosing them buisness...........but i do have to say the petsmart that radley works at has a pretty knowlegable staff including radley himself.....

i use the petsmart aroud here to get deals off of mis labeled fish but other then that eh they know very little about. probaly all i could tell u in 2 mins, but i did happen to buy a nice midas off of them ill post pics of it later i just sold it.

yes, we do have mislabeled fish sometimes. i think it is our store's way of saying that we are different haha

my LFS has a pretty good knowledge of fish but they can exagerate. like i was going to buy 3 yellow lab cichlids and they were all like "you can't get those becasue they will eat everything" i know they are arressive but "eating" the other fish was a little overboard.

it happens, i exaggerate sometimes because I know people shouldn't have a certain fish. It isn't that I do not know what I am talking about, it is that I do not want them to have a fish they have no clue.

Don't worry, I would have hooked you up with those botias. Sunday I had to tell someone I work with that a Jack and a Firemouth could not go in a ten and that we do have the right to refuse sales and I do it all the time. It is at our discretion and as long as we have a proponderance of evidence (just like court) than we can refuse a sale. The one thing I tell new people is that we can refuse sales if we know that it isn't right.

The Petsmart I use to work out was really good. The staff ofr the most part was knew their stuff but here is the problem. The "fish people" or pet care specialist as Petsmart calls them, also take care of the reptiles, birds, and small animals. So, since some one who knows a good bit about all those mentioned animals is rare hiring some one with alot of knowlege in one group and limited in the next is common. Take me for example, I knew my fish quite well to help your typical fish customer, but most likely on some bird forum some one is talking abou how stupid the petmart guy was because I didnt know about the breeding behavior of ringneck doves...

Any our fish were always in top notches shape. Our filtration system was excellent with not one but two DOZEN UV filters! We fed our fish morning and night with appropriate food, including frozen...not jsut flakes like most places. And to top it off we ahd a 14 day garuntee w/o a water sample needed! How crazy is that?! We also could refuse sale to anyone if we felt it was right.

the petsmarts are ok around here the employees may not know much but theyre very friendly.
Now that ive found that there is a really good lfs in the capital region with interesting stock good prices and knowlegable employees ill do most of my fish purchases there

It's commendable that you are proud of the Petsmart where you work. From my experience you're the exception, not the norm. The fact that you're active here in addition to working at Petsmart is an indication of how different you are from the norm.

Some of us work really hard, and it seems like you and I prove it. Our most important concern is our animals. I don't know much about birds either, but my boss does. I know a lot about fish and reptiles, so that is what I deal with mostly, and I also deal with a lot of the oddball cases when I work.

I still go to my LFS a lot, the owner is a great guy.

Thanks fishmaven, I try and it means a lot. I just wish other people felt the way I did and maybe we wouldn't get such a bad rap.
