Wow thats not good. Id say their oxygen deprived, what are your water params? Any bubbles? Do you use dechlorinator when u add tap water? How many fish what size tank?

I am over stocked with 9 large to extra large fish. Its a 110 gallon tank. I have two jets and use a Rena filstar XP. No bubbles. Should I raise the water coming in? I do use prime dechlorinater. I had fake plants and now use all real plants but the behavior continues regardless.

your water conditions are probably pretty bad since you said you only do a wc every 3 weeks and also over stocked. I would start doing small partial water changes daily to get the water quality better, if you do a large water change right away it may cause the fish to go into shock and die. I agree with what the others said it is probably lack of oxygen in the water and also your nitrates and total dissolved solutes are probably really high.

basic break down of water chemistry.

I've had the same routine for over a year. I have to think that these guys are getting so big that I need to remove one. The Oscar is the youngest and growing real fast. When I do water changes I only take out 15 gallons and add 20.

This only happens after a water change. How can I reduce the nitrates gradually? Should I just change out 5 gallons a day or should I add something to my filter?

How often do you feed them and how much?

I think it would be a good idea to do 50% once every two weeks with these guys. Ideally, 50% once a week.

Do you have a liquid test kit handy where you could give me your water parameters?

Ammonia, nitrite, nitrates:

good job on using the prime that is locking up the nitrates so that it cant hurt your fish but is still available to be processed by your filter. I would use more prime to help lock up more nitrates since it's a safe product and you can use up to 5x the regular dosage.

I think you should do about a 10-15g wc would be good.

to give you a comparison it's usually suggest that nitrates be under 40.

Only have a quick dip Ph tester. Never have tested for nitrates. I also have never changed out more than %25 of my water. feel like any more would be excessive. Ph is sitting at about 7.0. I feed them a mix of sinking pellets and floating sticks once a day 5 days a week. And give them frozen krill once a week. They always eat everything quickly and I'm carefull not to give them too much
