strange bloat problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i thought it was normal then they would bend in half and with in hours be bloated on the surface.

i think the salt may have helped some because they have not bent in half, yet, and 2 seem less bloated, but there is no poo anywere to be found. thats not counting on the guppies not eating it. i'll see how it goes. i may go pick up some hornwert for added everything. i'll prazi as a last ditch effort. i use it on bigger fish and rays, but these small gars and other small gar i have never done it before and these are irreplaceable to me. i have a crazy thing with firsts and these are my first lng fry, my first gars i've caught and they are not something that, well, any lfs or vendor has now that tfd has gone under.

i wouldn't count on the guppies eating all the waste from the LNG, so if they are producing waste you should definitely see it. good that they are still hanging on though. definitely save the fish if they die so you can necropsy them and maybe see what the issue was...definitely DO NOT feed them to your other gars; if you think they had bloat or some other problem, the last thing you want to do is risk introducing the issue to your larger fishes (even if they are likely less susceptible...at this point we don't know what it is).

i wouldn't risk prazi...as Amy said, these little guys are likely too fragile for that, and i wouldn't try that with them unless you have absolutely no other options. i would try epsom salts before prazi personally, but for now just leave the system be and see if they can counter the issue on their own. good luck--

ya my mind has been gone lately alot of personal family things have had me distracted from them. i didn't see any waste so i can't if they are or aren't. they do not seem to be getting worse. they seem almost to be holding were there are to slight decrease in the bloat. we will see what tomorrow brings.

i have not done anything to the tank since the salt from before and i have left it alone. i just lost another to the same problem. i froze it since i didnt have time to examine it. i have been real busy lately. ill post pics of the fish i examine and what i find.

I would isolate them into a smaller tank, It looks like digestive, or swimbladder. Use epsom salts 1tsp/gal. And feed them a peeled cooked green pea. Then fast them for at least 4 days. water temp 78 - 80. If this doesn't work, I would treat for bacteria.

they are the only fish in a 10gal. all i have is 2 gars in it except for feeders. they will not eat peas i promise you that. the ambiant temp is the only thing that is not constant 100% of the time. i seem to have lost my lazer temp so i am not sure the exact twmp but the house has been at 70f for some time now. i have left my air on because i lost some due to heat.

i am at a loss. another one is bloated up, it is still alive but not upside down. my only other gar left appears to be ok. i dont know if it will be fine. they have all seem to come down with this. i have no idea what to do now. this is the same thing i lost a black aro to a few years ago. no matter what i try nothing seems to work. they all end up dead. my brother keeps telling me at least they were free, but it still pisses me off that i cant figure it out. i feel like a dog chasing its tail....frustrated would be an understatment!
