I think she has eggs. I have a two male mbuna's. Will they attempt to spawn with a peacock.
I am new too cichlids and not concerned about hybrid as the peacocks are probably hybrids anyways.

Also is their any kind of official pure breed papered cichilds.

Are strawberry, dragons bloods, and firefish the same
Lake maliwai peacock, hap, mbuna line? Or are they a some where in "Africa" lake cichlid?

I won't be much help on Malawi questions. As far as the "papered question," about the best we can do is produce a receipt from an importer for wild caught stock in support of selling their F1 fry.

She spawned last night, none of the 1.3" males were interested.
She is 2" long.
How long does a female need too be a with a male to pair up?

I picked up a male Dragons Blood today. 15 minutes after being in the tank. He is in full spawning behavior with the two females.

Currious if any egg she laid yesterday. That she is holding could have gotten fertilized.

The second female is not quite ready yet.

Second strawberry female, will be spawning soon. She has spent all day digging sand. My blue mbuna is mature as he spawned last week with his same psudotrophus.
The yellow lab male is probably mature also.
Unfortunately my male fire fish, jumped.

If you use trusted vendors and purchase fish with correct scientific names and collection points, you can get pure fish. When buying from a hobbyist I always ask the origin of his stock to make sure they came from a vendor I trust.

Malawi are harem breeders, they do not pair. It could take a year or a day for a group to spawn...it's not very predictable.

Update,
I finally got eggs fertilized, after about 10 egg laying cycles between 4 different dragons/strawberry cichlids. Problem was my males were really females.
None of the other males, yellow labs, psudotrouphus were interested.

Those are all man made hybrids. Malawi's are like rabbits, even 2 males will try to spawn with each other. In the cramped confines of our aquariums hybrids will often happen which is why breeders will keep species only tanks to ensure the fish are pure.

Sorry old thread revived. Yes hybrids, will just happen.
My hypothesis. In a heavily stocked 75 gallon tank with 10 mature males, and 20 females. The odd species male, can not compete. As for every one female actively laying eggs. Their are 5 males, dueling for her. Chasing off every other fish. Except the same type males, that are chasing off the odd species fish.

Lots of rock habitat. Line of sight breaks. Give the lesser males a place to chill for a while

8x zoomed across room. They are actively spawning grainy picture.
Thier are 5 males in the tank. This young male, a Firefish variant of hybrid peacock. Relentlessly chased off every fish to spawn with the Strawberry variant.
