no heater at all. The tank is in my garage that is heated during winter months and kept a 50 degrees. During the summer the garages gets to be fairly warm around 80 degrees. the I have to use fans and ice to kept water temps down.

Dude sweet setup. I have been watching your native tanks for years. Actually your vidoes got me into fish keeping. I liked going fishing for blue gill, and while looking at videos of people bass fishing, and bluegill fishing I came across your video of the I think 150 gallon native tank. And I wanted to setup a bluegill tank. So I got a 29 gallon kit for 12th birthday, and I had to wait for a stand. So while waiting for my stand, my mom convinced me to do tropical fish. 3 years later I am sitting in my room with a 55 gallon, and a 29 gallon, and its all thanks to your videos. I still want to do a native tank, and if I do I will be sure to come your way!

Thanks, I am happy my tanks were your inspiration to get started in this great hobby. Whenever you get ready to set up a native tank please feel free to ask me any question. I love helping others and enjoy seeing their tanks.

Great tutorial! I appreciate you sharing the information. I am curious as to what kind of sand you use. Is it washed or just strait run you dig up yourself? My Michigan sand has clay dust in it which may effect it sticking to the foam. Can you share any tips or a source?

It was just sand collect from river unwashed. I'm from Ohio and all the river sand around here also has clay dust/silt. You can rinse it first but make sure it dries out completely. I found that damp sand doesn't stick as well.
As for a source, I just collect it from dried out sand bars from creeks and rivers. Some quarries or landscaping places might have some. I like the stuff with pebbles and bits of shells and other stuff in it. It gives a more natural look.

Then I am in luck. I have a small pit on my place that I dig gravel for driveway repairs that is just the stuff. All I have to do is wait for it to thaw. It could be a while!
